What is fit for one is not for another

After recovering from a 3:47 Fran, Derek told me, “I could hear you yelling but your voice was getting further away.” That’s called hypoxia, or oxygen deficiency. The oxygen demand of the motor muscles was so high, he was literally approaching his physical limit. His lungs could not exchange enough CO2 for O2 and his heart could not distribute it fast enough. The result was that the available oxygen in the blood was nearly insufficient for basic cognitive functions like consciousness.
It takes a combination of conditioning and willpower to push yourself like that. I respect the heart it takes to get to that point. The physical and psychic stresses are extremely uncomfortable. Regardless of the actual time it took, you have to walk away from a workout like that proud and satisfied.
Now having said that, know that Derek is a special case. He’s one of the strongest guys in the gym and is routinely in the hunt for the fastest time or the heaviest lift. Pushing your body to this extreme is not appropriate for everyone and I don’t want to advocate that everyone should be flinging themselves headlong off a cliff towards hypoxia, nausea, rhabdo, or debilitating soreness. One person’s physical threshold is going to be different than another. It’s why the 10 minute Fran with scaled weights and assisted pull-ups can still be epic and inspiring when it’s that person’s equivalent of Derek’s 3:47.
Another inspiring performance was Jaclyn who was well into the “dark place”, but dug deep and finished the last round unbroken on pure guts. Amanda deserves mention as well for getting a 5:38 claiming the top time just 9 seconds ahead of Andrea’s blistering 5:47.
The fastest women’s time I know of is 3:51. For men it’s 1:58. We’re getting fast, but there are some really fast people out there.

Dammit!
Dammit?
Yes Dammit is right. I feel worse by not coming in all week than i would have after “fran”. Greta job derrick and everyone who pushed through.
all right Amanda it’s a fran off!
Nice job, Derek! I wish I could’ve see it.
Fastest reported women’s time is 3:12–check it here: http://games2009.crossfit.com/regionals/erin-cianciolo-vs-fran.html
Erin is my hero; her pic in on my desktop.
If I could just string those g@# d#$* pull ups together…
Oh, and I wholeheartedly second Morgan’s “epic 10 min assisted Fran” comments. To all of you fabulous beginners–if you stick with Crossfit, you will be amazed when you do this workout again. Amazed.
Andrea,
What…you don’t like to share the green box?!?hehe. I love that we’re good enough friends to razz each other.
To be totally honest, I wasn’t even chasing you. I just wanted to beat my old time of 6:55, but when I got to the 9 thrusters and saw the clock at 5 minutes, I thought, “heck! I’m goin’ for her!”
Dammit I wish I could have seen it and Dammit, I’m a bit competitive and am only 10 seconds away from Derek’s big guy time. Truly happy for all the PRs everyone got though, honestly. This is why we do this
darnit, i wish i could have come in and posted a slow enough time to give hope to the beginners.
darn injuries, just recovered from back pain and hurt my shoulder/lat. grrrrrrr.
F-ing Fran was one of the first that got me hooked. Kudos, Derek.
Derek was done so quick i had thought that he quit after the first round (no idea he was really done, that was kind of funny) …Andrea was particulary impressive with her butterfly kip pullups, looked like something from the matrix…it was amazing.
Thx for the mention that was a BIG deal to me. I’m a proud baby-blue-banded-kipper! Wahoo!
Hey Morgan, did the competition get cancelled for tomorrow?
Heidi, and everyone else, yes the competition is canceled for lack of interest. We’ll have 9am class as normal and breakfast afterward. I think it’s been 2 months since I’ve been there. I’ve got bacon on my mind.
I love bacon!!!!
nice work Derek. Fran just kills me. It gets in my head long before I pick up the weight. I managed to eek out a new PR by 1 second, but still almost a minute slower than Derek.
Check out Rob Orlando doing a one armed Fran.
