Trainer Profile: Leon Aldrich

1. How did you get started doing CrossFit?

A friend told me go to the website and check out a movement called the “Turkish Get Up”.  That was in 2004.  I read a bunch about Crossfit and I just really bought into the idea of fitness being broad and inclusive.  It really matched up well with the MMA training I was doing, so I started incorporating it into my workouts and then it made it’s way into the training I was doing with clients.  I’ve learned a lot in the last 6 years and Crossfit was an important avenue for that learning process.
2. What is your favorite movement or WOD?
I can’t pick just one.  I love Muscle Ups and Deadlifts.  I think it’s because it’s hard to be good at both and they are the only two movements in which I have a slight edge against Morgan.  Well actually, I could crush him in any eating contest involving wheat products, but that just makes me fatter and slower so he beats me in everything else.  I also really enjoy a well executed Snatch.
3. What do you find to be the most challenging part of CrossFit?
Training intelligently.  It’s easy to get caught up in the competition and not pay attention to the signs of over-training.
4. What have you gained from being a trainer at CrossFit Tacoma?
Lot’s of experience.  Some excellent friends.  And an opportunity to grow beyond just being a personal trainer.  It is a tremendous challenge to help people with such varying backgrounds and skill sets achieve their goals safely and effectively.  Add that to the challenges of being a business owner which I am beginning to get a taste of thanks to Morgan and Lisa. Every shoulder tweak or sore back makes me feel like I need to be better at my job, but every first pull up or muscle up or 10lbs lost makes me feel like I made a difference.  I can’t imagine doing anything else.
5. If you weren’t a CrossFit Trainer what would you want your job to be?
I just said I can’t imagine doing anything else.  But, when I was a kid I wanted to be a dolphin trainer, so that’s my back up plan.
6. What do you like to do for fun?
I like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain.  I also like to read (not really, but it makes me sound smarter).  I love being outdoors although I don’t get out nearly as often as I would like.  This past winter I started snowboarding and it’s very addictive.
7. If you could donate a million dollars to a non-profit organization which organization would you choose and why?
I’ve always been a fan of the Make a Wish Foundation, but to be honest I’d probably want to start my own foundation.  I haven’t thought about this too much, but I promise I will think it through very carefully when I am in the position to be able to give away that much money.  So far I mostly have been donating to Capital One.
8. Which is the funniest prank played on you or played by you?
When I was a kid, my parents convinced me that there was a jolly fat guy in a red suit who flew around the world giving presents to good boys and girls.  When I found out otherwise, I was devastated.  That was a good one.
9. If your house was on fire and you could grab only 3 things before leaving, what would they be?
Phone, keys, wallet.  Everything else can burn.  I’m assuming people and animals don’t count.
10. What would your dream vacation be?
Lot’s of options, but the Galapagos Islands are pretty high on my list.
11. What is your favorite Paleo meal?
It’s not the fanciest meal, but I love grass fed ground beef or buffalo with onions, mushrooms and sauerkraut.  It reminds me of a Reuben sandwich and its cheap and easy to make.
