Old School Coaching

The beginning of Crossfit Tacoma.

In the ongoing effort to become increasingly awesome, I’ve got some announcements to make about some changes around here.  Thought I’d try and bring up some good news after yesterday’s car break in bulletin.

New Trainer

Amy’s back to coaching, she found a way to swing it while managing three kids.  If you’ve been coming since the beginning, you’ll remember Amy’s awesome coaching back when this place was an empty warehouse.  The team back then was Morgan, Leon, Amy and Lisa and they did an awesome job of running this place and teaching movements.  To this day I’m trying to live up to the example these guys set in the beginning.  Amy’s got an amazing understanding of the Olympic Lifts, and has a straight forward and accessible way of teaching it.  She’ll be filling in for Morgan on Tuesdays for the 8:30 and 9:30 classes.

Free Child Care

We’ve found a few of our members willing to pull child care duty during one of the morning classes at Fawcett.  During the 9:30 am class, Monday through Friday, we’ll have someone keeping the kiddos entertained and contained in the kid jail.  Think of them like a babysitter/prison warden, this is a free service to our members.  However, if you want your kid to learn how to move while you get your much needed alone time, hit up Lisa@crossfittacoma.com about kids classes.  That one costs cash money.

Jump Rope Clinic

Next Monday, the 20th, Lisa and Emmi will take the gym over from 5:30 to 6:30.  Instead of the workout of the day it will be an hour dedicated to developing better coordination, timing, accuracy, and some damn strong ankles through jump rope training.  If jumping rope is your nemesis, come face down the beast and put an hour of practice in.  It’ll be BYOJ if you own one (bring your own jump rope) just in case there’s a big turn out, so we have enough ropes for everyone.

Crossfit Games Open

First workout is released next Wednesday, we’ll have 5 weeks and 5 workouts to finish.  You can expect heavy weights, high skill movements, and draining workouts.  If you are on the fence about this, sign up now or you might regret not participating later.  Regardless if you feel you can make it to regionals or not, this will help you push to take your training to another level.  Register at the crossfit games site, check for the first workout next Wednesday, and join us Saturday mornings at 11 am to run heats of athletes through the workout.  Everyone is invited to come watch and cheer our athletes on.  Non members pay $5 per day to compete, or $20 for all 5 weeks to use the gym for the open heats.

CF Open Prep Class

If you’re planning on competing, let’s get together every week to practice prior to the Saturday heats.  The workouts are released Wednesday, so Thursday nights at 5:30 I’m gonna run a class aimed at working the fundamentals of the open workout.  Not trying to take away from Kris’ awesome mobility classes, but this will give us time to recover before the Saturday heats.  It will be a bit of an informal class, we’ll meet up to practice, mobilize, and talk strategy to maximize output.  My goal this year is to have everyone who signs up for the open make it through injury free, and skill practice with mobility work will help you maintain good form under the heavy loads required for competition.
