Athlete Profile: Katie Hoyt
This is not Katie. In case you were worried. A few weeks ago we featured a profile of Craig O’Hanlon. My intention is to make this a regular occurrence, as there seems to be no shortage of awesomeness at Tacoma Strength. Craig is a tough act to follow, but Katie gives him a run for his money. If you know Katie, you are lucky, end of story. Sometimes I need to be reminded why I decided to be part of opening a gym. What was I thinking? Katie’s... Read More
Shameless Self Promotion
Before we begin I feel like I should at least mention some news about the gym first. Several people got their first muscle ups in the recent days. I know of two first hand: Matt D. and Rob C. In fact, Rob was so excited to reach this achievement he leapt through my personal bubble to give me a giant bear hug. That’s ok, a muscle up is a big deal for Crossfit. It should be also noted that Matt got his muscle up 4 months before... Read More
Thursday is a Snow Day
Alright. We never like to cancel classes, but in light of the weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow, it only makes sense. Today we had small (though fun!) classes, but two trainers were unable to make it in to work the evening classes at Fawcett, and Leon left early in order to get home before the roads froze. The forecast calls for a 50% chance of more snow tonight and 90% for tomorrow. Instead, you have homework. Do a set of Tabata... Read More
Headspace
Reading Leon’s interview of Craig last week, I was struck by an observation which reinforced a thought I’ve been mulling lately. What I noticed was that when Craig decided to give the Paleo prescription a try, he went and bought 3 books on the subject and read them over a weekend. Then he used one as a guide, taking recipes from it which he used for his meals. Then he created a blog where he shared his thoughts and experience. ... Read More
Athlete Profile: Craig O’Hanlon
We have several members who have recently had or will soon have their one year anniversary of training with us at Tacoma Strength. I would like to thank and congratulate all of you who have been with us for a year or more. Craig O’Hanlon had his one year anniversary last week. I’ve been talking with Craig about summarizing his thoughts and experiences this past year. I sent him a few questions that I had about his transformation.... Read More
Let’s Play
We’ve mentioned it before, but it’s worth saying again. And since I’ve just spent the last hour calling every Crossfit gym in Pierce County to schedule them to come, it’s foremost on my mind. And that is the LETS PLAY Sports and Fitness Fest at the Downtown Convention Center this weekend. You’ve seen flyers and posters at the gyms. It will showcase 30+ sports and clubs in Pierce County, including a gymnastics meet and... Read More
“The Fat Trap”
There was recently an interesting article written in the New York Times called “The Fat Trap“. The author presents some compelling scientific research indicating why it is so difficult to maintain weightloss for the long term. I will let you read her article to draw your own conclusions, but I think there are some problems with the diets used to lose and maintain weight. Anyone out there who has lost significant weight and been able... Read More
Whats happening January 2012
As some of you might have noticed, we’ve started making changes to our brand image at the end of last year. New logo, new name, what gives? Allow me to pull the curtain back a bit so you can see what the monkeys at the wheel are doing. I’ll start with a couple of things I have been dissatisfied with. First is the old logo with the mountain and the wave. Some people liked it, but it never fully sat right with me. Frankly it was... Read More

So I apologize for the post in advance. I feel like my entries have been sporadic at best and getting something up there is at least better than nothing. Sometimes I spend too much time fine-tuning my words but I’m going to try and not do that now. Here is the deal: I’ve got a whole bunch of stuff I’d like to talk about but I don’t want to spend much time writing about that. You will all get the short tidbits. Want to know more? ...
