I Need More Cardio

Last week we did a “Filthy Fifty” style wod.  A few people asked me why we don’t do workouts like that more often.  The short answer is that it’s not good for you.  A few years back, Melissa Urban (now Melissa Hartwig) of Whole 9 Nutrition wrote a lovely article on the subject titled “Beware Lure of the Sexy Met-Con”. Getting your ass handed to you by a workout builds character and fitness to a degree.  Too... Read More

Healthy Eating Round Table

Our Pine st. Clean Eaters have been doing extra awesome this time around.  Craig from CavemanBistro.com has been a big help with our success.  He would like to expand his circle of helpfulness to all.  He called it a “lecture series”, but I think it is meant to be more of a round table discussion group.  Whatever you call it, it should be a fun informational get together.  Below is the info. PALEO LECTURE SERIES: I will be hosting... Read More

Athlete Profile: Katie Hoyt

This is not Katie. In case you were worried. A few weeks ago we featured a profile of Craig O’Hanlon.  My intention is to make this a regular occurrence, as there seems to be no shortage of awesomeness at Tacoma Strength.  Craig is a tough act to follow, but Katie gives him a run for his money. If you know Katie, you are lucky, end of story.  Sometimes I need to be reminded why I decided to be part of opening a gym. What was I thinking?  Katie’s... Read More

Athlete Profile: Craig O’Hanlon

We have several members who have recently had or will soon have their one year anniversary of training with us at Tacoma Strength.  I would like to thank and congratulate all of you who have been with us for a year or more. Craig O’Hanlon had his one year anniversary last week.  I’ve been talking with Craig about summarizing his thoughts and experiences this past year.  I sent him a few questions that I had about his transformation.... Read More

“The Fat Trap”

There was recently an interesting article written in the New York Times called “The Fat Trap“.  The author presents some compelling scientific research indicating why it is so difficult to maintain weightloss for the long term.  I will let you read her article to draw your own conclusions, but I think there are some problems with the diets used to lose and maintain weight. Anyone out there who has lost significant weight and been able... Read More

Tacoma Strength Gear

It’s been a long time coming, but we finally have some awesome t shirts for sale.  We started with a relatively small order, but we can get more pretty quickly.  This current batch of shirts will be sold for $15 each (plus tax).  Once these are gone we will have to start charging $20 per shirt.  I’d love to give them away, but nobody wants to wear a shirt from a gym that went out of business. We also ordered a couple of hoodies for... Read More

Working Tension

Looks like Joseph forgot his parachute again.   The title of the post is not referring to occupational stress, rather it is a term relating to the amount of tension you need to execute a given movement or position.  Kelly Starrett and Carl Paoli from mobilitywod.com give some examples and some suggestions for practice. The idea is that you want to find just enough tension to maintain the integrity of your position, but conserve enough energy... Read More

Survey Says

In our tireless quest for world domination, we at Tacoma Strength/Crossfit Tacoma realize that we can’t conquer the world without the help of our members and friends.  We still need to grow in quantity as well as quality.  We have an incredible base of members and we need your help to find more people like you. We have a very short (1 page) survey available at both locations as of this morning.  Your participation will help us to improve... Read More

Mobile Texting

Texting while driving is illegal and generally a bad idea.  What’s almost as bad?  Texting under the influence of crappy posture.  Optimum positioning is crucial for any exercise you do in the hour a day you spend at the gym.  What about the other 23 hours? Kelly Starret’s MWOD explains proper texting posture in what he calls the “most important Mobility WOD ever“.  Mobility is so important that it deserves to have an... Read More
