Athlete Profile: Katie Hoyt
This is not Katie. In case you were worried. A few weeks ago we featured a profile of Craig O’Hanlon. My intention is to make this a regular occurrence, as there seems to be no shortage of awesomeness at Tacoma Strength. Craig is a tough act to follow, but Katie gives him a run for his money. If you know Katie, you are lucky, end of story. Sometimes I need to be reminded why I decided to be part of opening a gym. What was I thinking? Katie’s... Read More
Athlete Profile: Craig O’Hanlon
We have several members who have recently had or will soon have their one year anniversary of training with us at Tacoma Strength. I would like to thank and congratulate all of you who have been with us for a year or more. Craig O’Hanlon had his one year anniversary last week. I’ve been talking with Craig about summarizing his thoughts and experiences this past year. I sent him a few questions that I had about his transformation.... Read More
“The Fat Trap”
There was recently an interesting article written in the New York Times called “The Fat Trap“. The author presents some compelling scientific research indicating why it is so difficult to maintain weightloss for the long term. I will let you read her article to draw your own conclusions, but I think there are some problems with the diets used to lose and maintain weight. Anyone out there who has lost significant weight and been able... Read More
Tacoma Strength Gear
It’s been a long time coming, but we finally have some awesome t shirts for sale. We started with a relatively small order, but we can get more pretty quickly. This current batch of shirts will be sold for $15 each (plus tax). Once these are gone we will have to start charging $20 per shirt. I’d love to give them away, but nobody wants to wear a shirt from a gym that went out of business. We also ordered a couple of hoodies for... Read More
Working Tension
Looks like Joseph forgot his parachute again. The title of the post is not referring to occupational stress, rather it is a term relating to the amount of tension you need to execute a given movement or position. Kelly Starrett and Carl Paoli from mobilitywod.com give some examples and some suggestions for practice. The idea is that you want to find just enough tension to maintain the integrity of your position, but conserve enough energy... Read More

Mobile Texting
Texting while driving is illegal and generally a bad idea. What’s almost as bad? Texting under the influence of crappy posture. Optimum positioning is crucial for any exercise you do in the hour a day you spend at the gym. What about the other 23 hours? Kelly Starret’s MWOD explains proper texting posture in what he calls the “most important Mobility WOD ever“. Mobility is so important that it deserves to have an... Read More
Poison Plastics
The last few weeks, I feel like I’ve been a harbinger of doom in regards to my blog posts. I opened the wound when I brought up the possible extinction of the banana, then I added some salt when I suggested that our poor sleeping habits are making us fatter, and sicker. This week, I thought I would cheer things up a bit. At least that was my plan, until I failed to get enough sleep last night and darkened my outlook on life. So, we will... Read More
Go The F#@K To Sleep
We all know how terrible we feel when we don’t get sufficient sleep and we’ve all experienced how we feel like a different person when we get a really good night of sleep. Your fitness, health, and weight loss goals are heavily dependent on getting the right amount and quality of sleep. This study “Role of Sleep and Sleep Loss in Hormonal Release and Metabolism” discusses how insufficient sleep disrupts the levels... Read More
