February’s Clean Eating Challenge
I hereby retire the name “Clean Eating Challenge”, from now on this will be referred to as the “No Crap for your Face Hole Month”. You have to say the whole thing too, no abbreviations or acronyms. We’ll be running it a bit differently this time, but we’ll still divide everyone into teams. If you would like to participate in the ”No Crap for your Face Hole Month”, we’ll need you to fill... Protein Power
I enjoyed talking about the clean eating challenge last week, thought I’d go a bit more in depth on eating enough meat. Lets expand on this, and talk about getting enough protein down. This is important in terms of getting good results out of the challenge, but also to recover well and adapt to the strength training we practice here. Protein requirements can vary based on size, activity levels, and goals. As a general rule, I’ve... Read More
New Year, New Challenges
Starting Strength, Back Squat Challenge- I’ve got to give credit to my lunch time group today, Joey, Lisa, Ryan, and Neil for inspiring this one. Every day you’re in the gym in January you’re gonna work 3×5 back squats. Pretty simple, but not by any means easy. Here are the details; -3 days a week you back squat heavy, ideally increasing the load by 5 pounds every workout. If you reach a point where you can’t... Read More
Confession
Sometimes as coaches we make the mistake of over simplifying advice for you guys. One of the big areas I catch myself doing this on is diet recommendations, when I go into auto pilot and categorize foods. Paleo and not paleo foods, which then makes it easy for you guys to stick foods into 1 of 2 categories, or eat this and not that. The truth is however, there is no such thing as paleo food. Unless you’re Robb Wolf, he’s the only... Read More
Easy Meals
Easy Breakfast- Dice up celery, zucchini, green onion, kale, and mushrooms. Fry up with coconut oil, or some delicious beef tallow. 21 seasoning salute from Trader Joes goes great with these veggies. Fry up 1 pound of grass fed ground beef separately, season to taste. Trader Joes has grass fed beef for 6 bucks a pound. Meat and veggie breakfast, try sliced up avocado on top. This is my go to breakfast, takes 10 minutes and serves two. Dinner- 2... Read More
Caveman Bistro
Yet another plug for our own Craig O’Hanlon’s Caveman Bistro website; awesome ideas for nutritious paleo meals. Get Your Co-op On
The Tacoma Co-op is here at last! This is a great opportunity, not only to have fresh, local, quality food available year round, but also to grow a healthy food culture in Tacoma. The store is scheduled to open August 26th at the corner of 6th and Junett (where the Neighborhood Market is now). The hours will be 8:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday through Saturday and 10:00 am to 7:00 pm on Sunday. The vision: a grocery store and community space dedicated... Read More
You Want Me To Eat What?
You crack open your eyes and look around. It’s morning time. The sun is shining. It’s not very cold. You just know this is going to be a great day. You put your arms overhead and try to rouse yourself to consciousness with a great big stretch, but wait…It seems as if the Sore Fairy came last night and dusted you with a great big helping of achiness. Then it all comes back to you like a bad night in desperate need of... Read More
But Everybody Knows
Whenever we have a brand new client, we usually like to work with them for a one on one session. We do this prior to letting them loose in the pursuit of strength and pure, unrefined awesomeness. One of the questions I like to ask during these first exposures for new people is how well they are eating. First as a general question, then as a more specific what have you eaten today. Typical answer would be, “I eat pretty healthy, compared... Read More
This Just In
I came across an article on Robb Wolf’s blog about some nutrition “experts” acting ridiculous. A recent health post on US News claims to rank the Best Diets, drawing from a pool of the most popular diets this year. They picked 20 diets and ranked them based on 7 categories; short term weight loss, long term weight loss, easy to follow, nutrition, safety, for diabetes, and for heart health. Each diet was ranked in every category,... Read More
